Bowser Builders Chess Tournament No More
I have notified Betsy and Mac at Bowser Builders that I will not be able to organise the annual tournament in 2019. Though I regret that we will not have the annual Bowser Builders Chess Tournament this year I am proud of what we have achieved since we had our first tournament in 2009 at the Bowser Legion hall. We have met some incredible chess players and established connections with the Victoria Chess club that were invaluable in getting our tournaments up and running. Elliot Raymer from Victoria was instrumental as our first Tournament Director when he was only 15 years of age. Roger Patterson as president of the Victoria Chess Club and President of the B.C. Chess Federation was tremendously supportive of our club and our tournaments. Paul Leblanc and his wife Louise also of Victoria have supported our tournaments almost every year.
Our tournaments were attended by the top chess players in B.C. over the years as can be seen by the names on our trophies. One of the more exciting memories was the participation of a very young Jason Cao in our first tournament only two months before he won the U10 category in the World Junior Championships in Greece. The Doknjas family of Surrey have been participants in our tournaments in latter years and have enhanced the reputation of our little tournament. On the ladies side we were honoured to have hosted Valeria Gansvind of Victoria in 2014.
Other notable competitors included Mark Dutton of Victoria in 2017, Jonathon Berry of Nanaimo in 2016 and Tom Sprandel of the Evanston Illinois Chess Club was TD in 2011.
I wish to extend thanks to Victoria Doknjas for her assistance in preparation of the following table of tournament results for the successive years.

Since 2013 for our 5th tournament Bowser Builders have sponsored the tournaments by purchasing the prizes for first and second place. This year they also provided a light breakfast and lunch with coffee for competitors and friends. The entire chess community and the Bishops of Bowser owe a debt of gratitude to Mac and Betsy for their support.
On behalf of the Bishops of Bowser, thanks to one and all.
Robert McFetridge, archbishop
